Caballo Oscuro Viura Chardonnay 2019 (Dry White)
The traditional white varieties grown in the Carinena region of the Ebro Valley are limited to Viura and Muscat. With the addition of the correct amount of Chardonnay, we add body to the backbone of acidity of the Viura and the floral aromatics of the Muscat.
The Ebro is the major river in the north-east of Spain and the largest river in Spain to run into the Mediterranean. Along its length there are many wine growing regions, , starting with the region of Rioja below the city of Logroño. From there it flows through the lower part of Navarra and then on past Campo de Borja, Calatayud and Cariñena… way on down towards the Priorat, Tarragona and to the sea.
The 2018 vintage was a fairly ‘normal’ vintage. Good winter snows left a base of humidity in the soils which were replenished throughout the summer, which was relatively cool. August and early September were warm, good for ripening before a final shower at the beginning of harvest time. For the rest of the harvest, the weather was windy and dry.
Tasting Notes of Caballo Oscuro Viura Chardonnay 2019: Aromas of fresh fruits (pineapple, peach) combine with a hint of jasmine and grassiness on the nose. The palate has the weight the older bush vine wines from the hills, combined with the freshness of younger trellised Viura and a touch of Muscat adding to the aromatics to make an attractive and very drinkable wine.
